QUEENS COUNTY MUSIC FESTIVAL AWARDS

To be eligible for a festival award, solo contestants must compete in a minimum of two solo performance classes in the same discipline, using standard repertoire. Piano Contemporary Idioms, RCM popular Music Classes, Method Book Classes and Graded Studies are all eligible for awards and for participation at the Provincial Festival. Junior Music Theatre and Composition awards require the participation in one class only. Composition is not eligible for Provincial Festival. Quick Study and Sight-reading Classes are not eligible for awards or Provincial Festival.

Music Theatre Classes: For Queens County Music Festival Award eligibility for Junior (ages 11 and under) requires one class only. Intermediate, Senior and Advanced eligibility is two classes, one up-tempo and one ballad. You may choose from Up-tempo, Ballad, Tin Pan Alley Era, Golden Age Era, Contemporary (1950 – present) and Gilbert and Sullivan classes, Other undesignated awards are granted on the basis of recommendation from the adjudicators.

All awards are subject to change, depending on the standard of performance, on the number of entries and on donations received.

Awards will be available for each age category, in each discipline, if funds are available.

This award is donated by The Prince Edward Island Registered Music Teachers’ Association. “Presented to an outstanding Intermediate, Senior or Advanced performer in each of the following categories Piano, Voice, Strings and Instrumental, in recognition of excellence. The adjudicator will make this choice based on marks and overall musicianship.

This award is donated by the friends of Louise Pritchard, and presented to an Organ participant who has earned excellent marks and who demonstrated highly expressive playing and good all-round musicianship. This award shall be presented no more than twice to any one participant.

Adjudicator Choice Award

This award is donated by the friends of Louise Pritchard, and presented to a Senior or Advanced Piano participant who demonstrates exceptional performance abilities in at least three solo classes, or a multi movement work plus one other class at the Senior/Advanced levels. This award can be divided between two participants and may be won no more than two times by one competitor.

JUNIOR ROSE BOWL AWARD: The Audrey Gillis Award……………………………………… $250.00

This award is sponsored by The Rotary Club of Charlottetown in honor of Audrey Gillis. This award will be presented to a festival participant, aged 18 years and under, who demonstrates exceptional performance abilities in a Recital Class (minimum requirement RCM Grade 8), two short movements from a concerto or sonata, or one long movement from a concerto or sonata and one other solo performance class in the same discipline. Participants must obtain a Gold Standard in the designated classes. Available for consideration in all disciplines.

This award is sponsored by Dr. Regis Duffy and Joan Duffy. This award will be presented to a festival participant, aged 18 years and over, who demonstrates exceptional performance abilities in a Recital Class (minimum requirement RCM Grade 8), two short movements from a concerto or sonata, or one long movement from a concerto or sonata and one other solo performance class in the same discipline. Participants must obtain a Gold Standard in the designated classes. Available for consideration in all disciplines.

Donated by the Stratford Community Choir, to honour Heather and Dunstan MacDonald founders and members of the choir. The choir expressed their gratitude to Heather and Dunstan by making this award available to young choirs. Award may be divided.

THE JOAN THOMPSON MEMORIAL CHORAL AWARD ……………………………………….. $100.00

Adjudicator Choice Award

This award is donated by the family of Joan Thompson. Joan sang in many choirs and directed a church choir of over 40 teenagers called the Jubilees, The teens loved her, and sang for her, and for themselves with great pride and appreciation. Joan touched the hearts of many and continues to encourage choral singing through this award. This Adjudicator Choice Award will be presented to a deserving choir(s) who demonstrate expressive singing and the joy of singing. This award may be presented as one $100.00 award or two $50.00 awards to deserving choirs.

THE RUTH SCHILLER PLAQUE ……………………………………………………………………..

Donated by Ruth Schiller in recognition of the most choral participation in the Queens County Music Festival by a school, competitive or non competitive eligibility. This award will be retired once the plaque is full.

QCMF ROSE BOWL COMPETITION 2023

Junior Rose Bowl… 17 years & under

Senior Rose Bowl … 18 years & over

The QCMF Rose Bowl competition recognizes the top performers in each discipline who performed in a Recital Group Class, or two movements from a concerto or sonata or one long movement from a concerto or sonata, (or equivalent, as assessed by the Adjudicator) and one other solo performance class in the same discipline. In voice, a Song Cycle of at least three songs or Recital Group Class will be considered as a qualifying class, plus one other solo performance class. Contestants must obtain a Gold Standard in the designated classes in order to advance to Rose Bowl Competition.

The adjudicators from the Queens County Music Festival may recommend for the Rose Bowl Competitions, ONE solo performer from each of the Vocal, Piano, Organ, Strings, Brass, Woodwind, Percussion and Guitar disciplines. In case of a tie two performers may be recommended from a discipline.

Contestants performing in Advanced classes will be required to perform in the Senior Rose Bowl Competition, regardless of age. The Junior Rose Bowl may be won by the same individual a maximum of three times, then they must move to the Senior level. The Senior Rose Bowl may be won by the same individual a maximum of three times.

The “Audrey Gillis” scholarship of $250, donated by The Rotary Club of Charlottetown, will be awarded to the winner of the Junior Rose Bowl. A scholarship of $500 donated by Joan and Dr. Regis Duffy will be awarded to the winner of the Senior Rose Bowl. The Rose Bowls are presented by the Music Department at the University of Prince Edward Island. All Rose Bowl participants will receive a plaque acknowledging their accomplishment. This plaque will be engraved and presented at the final concert.

Repertoire to be performed in the Rose Bowl competitions will be chosen by the appropriate adjudicator. Memorization is encouraged. The time limit for Junior Rose Bowl contestants is 14 minutes, and the time limit for Senior Rose Bowl contestants is 18 minutes. These limits include time required to set-up, tuning, pauses, and take-down. At the discretion of the panel of Adjudicators contestants who exceed the maximum time allowed may be disqualified.

The winners of the Rose Bowl competitions will be chosen by a panel of adjudicators, selected by the Queens County Music Festival Association, and the winners will be announced at the end of each Rose Bowl competition. Awards will be presented at the final concerts.

In 2023 the competition will be held at Park Royal United Church on Friday evening, May 5th. Junior competition is at 6:30pm and the Senior competition is at 8:00pm. Changes may be made, due to Covid-19, and will be shared on the web site www.peikmfa.ca
