ROSE BOWL COMPETITION

Junior Rose Bowl ……………………………………. 17 years and under

Senior Rose Bowl …………………………………. 18 years and over

The QCMFA Rose Bowl competition recognizes the top performers in each discipline who performed in a Recital Group Class, or two movements from a concerto or sonata or one long movement from a concerto or sonata, (or equivalent, as assessed by the Adjudicator) and one other solo performance class in the same discipline. In voice, a Song Cycle of at least three songs or Recital Group Class will be considered as a qualifying class, plus one other solo performance class. Contestants must obtain a Gold Standard in the designated classes in order to advance to Rose Bowl competition.

The adjudicators from the Queens County Music Festival may recommend for the Rose Bowl Competitions ONE solo performer from each of the Vocal, Piano, Organ, Strings, Brass, Woodwind, Percussion and Guitar disciplines. In case of a tie two performers may be recommended from a discipline.

Contestants performing in Advanced classes will be required to perform in the Senior Rose Bowl Competition, regardless of age. The Junior Rose Bowl may be won by the same individual a maximum of three times, then they must move to the Senior level. The Senior Rose Bowl may be won by the same individual a maximum of three times.

Repertoire to be performed in the Rose Bowl competitions will be chosen by the appropriate adjudicator. Memorization is encouraged. The time limit for Junior Rose Bowl contestants is 15 minutes, and the time limit for Senior Rose Bowl contestants is 20 minutes. These limits include time required to set-up, tuning, pauses, and take-down. At the discretion of the panel of Adjudicators, contestants who exceed the maximum time allowed may be disqualified.

The winners of the Rose Bowl competitions will be chosen by a panel of adjudicators from the Queens County Music Festival and the winners will be announced at the end of each Rose Bowl performance. Awards will be presented at the final concerts.

The winner of the Junior Rose Bowl will receive a trophy donated by the University of Prince Edward Island Department of Music, and a cash award of $250.00, donated by the Rotary Club of Charlottetown in honor of Audrey Gillis. The winner of the Senior Rose Bowl will receive a trophy, donated by the University of Prince Edward Island Department of Music, and a cash award of $500.00 donated by The Regis and Joan Duffy Foundation. All Rose Bowl participants will receive a plaque acknowledging their accomplishment. This plaque will be presented at the final concert.

In 2023 the competition will be held at Park Royal United Church on Friday evening, May 5th. Junior competition (ages 17 years and under) is at 6:30pm and the Senior competition (18 years and older) is at 8:00pm. Changes may be made, due to Covid-19, and will be shared on the web site www.peikmfa.ca

All music copyright must be observed. Handwritten copies or photocopies are not permitted. E-print music must have an accompanying receipt.

NOTE: PIANO PARTICIPANTS should consider a Recital Group Class or a Sonata Class. We cannot guarantee that a second piano will be available for the Rose Bowl Competition.
